COZY
I created a small, one-of-a-kind Balaclava Collection for Karo Koru. My lovely and talented friend Milan shot these gorgeous photos. Growing up in Finland, we learned how to knit in school. I hated it as a child but now find it incredibly therapeutic. It’s a blessed time away from screens. The Balaclava’s hand-knitted by me and my dear Finnish friend Valpuri. Each is one-of-a-kind and handmade by a Finn. I love them as they’re soft, cozy, and original.

Jänkälä
This collection is my most personal as it bears my grandmother’s maiden name: Jänkälä. She was a tough woman living off the land and raising children in the harsh environment of Lapland. She could soften her hard edges into a soothing love, which nurtured me. This combination inspired hope that I too could be delicate and tough.
Jänkälä is where softness meets strength. The delicate comes from 100-year-old vintage Japanese Silk flowers. The strong, from Vintage Rhodium metallic beads. Another layer of her serenity comes in the form of incredibly delicate ceramic beads from Japan from the 1970s.
This marriage of the bold and the soft is an ode to her, and to all women that manage to be nurturing and tenacious in the face of hardship.

TENERIFE
When I was a little girl from Lapland, we spent few spring breaks in Tenerife where my aunt owned a bar called Boca Boca. It was the 90’s. The Lambada played everywhere. The colors, sounds, and smells still ripple happily through my memories. It was an adventure, so foreign and tropical to a nine year old from the Arctic Circle. The locals were endlessly kind, loud, and fun. Music was constantly playing. The smell of coconut tanning oil and grilled fish and seafood mingled in the air. The Tenerife Collection is an ode to those happy 90’s memories; vibrant and loud and full of color and adventure.
TIVOLI
The Tivoli Collection springs from my youth, where I spent summers as a performer in a local circus group. I was a clown, an acrobat, and even learned to blow fire! Those summers were rich with fun, play, and excitement. It was this sense of joy and freedom that I yearned to capture in this collection.
I found my way recently into an old millinery and discovered an array of yet-to-be-formed hats from the 1950s. These floppy and fuzzy hats reminded me of Pelle Hermanni, my favorite TV show as a child. Pelle was a bittersweet clown, who despite everything going wrong for him, always came out smiling.
Pelle and my summers with the Tivoli circus are the playful memories unlocked in this collection. Irreverent fun, charm, texture, and color in our often too serious world.
